Production Diary 3

From gathering different peers together to form a focus group, it defiantly did help me and Billie out in confirming our initial ideas and help us think about other factors about our music video and how we are going to film it. We initially started off by showing our focus group the music video of Places by Martin Solveig which we got positive feedback in terms of the song choice as it is a very new and up to date song which a lot of young people listen to, which is what me and Billie initially thought anyway. We then proceeded to show them our initial ideas and also our pitch which we put together and asked if they thought the ideas for our actual music video were good and whether or not they thought our ideas of filming in different places was a good idea and also if they preferred a non narrative based music video as opposed to a narrative based music video which we also got positive feedback from.

We showed our focus group the risks that could possibly affect our filming which consisted of:

  • Timings - people getting in the way etc.
  • Transport - not being able to get to the places we want to due to trains etc.
  • The weather being bad
Our focus group agreed with these risks and agreed that they were out of our reach to change, therefore we will just need to consider these in the future. After showing them another music video 'I Got U' by Duke Dumont, they understood in greater detail the inspiration we were going for in terms of wanting to film in different places to truly correlate the lyrics of the song to the music video, however we did make it clear that it would be hard for us to film in places as exotic as the ones shown in 'I Got U' as neither of us were going to places like this, however we will do our best to get footage just as good.

Overall, I feel that the focus group was actually a very positive factor for us to carry out as we got opinions of our peers and it helped us to be certain on our ideas and the challenging questions some participants asked us really made us think about the outcome of our music video and how we are actually going to get there. I defiantly feel that getting other opinions from different people ensures positive and negative feedback which will only help us to achieve the best possible outcome when developing our music video.
